Help the Haiars on their NICU Journey
Sweet Avery Rae Haiar was born on July 16 at just 27 weeks to Dan & Maddie Haiar. She weighed 1 lb. 12 oz. But this baby girl is a fighter!
Her very early birth began with Maddie visiting her parents in Spirit Lake the weekend before. She’d been having swelling in her legs and feet, and her hands were going numb. Her mom, Jacinta, took her in to the ER to make sure she was ok. They immediately sent her by ambulance to Sioux Falls. Maddie had a very bad case of pre-eclampsia. Her blood pressure was 194/120, and the doctors were afraid she may start seizing. In addition, her protein levels were above 9,000 (for reference, they should be at around 300). Her liver enzymes were also quite high, and they were afraid of liver damage. After arriving at Avera McKennan, the neonatologist advised her that there was a 99% chance she would need to deliver the baby within the next two weeks. Maddie was only at 27 weeks, and baby was measuring around 24 weeks – she was a tiny peanut (but so is mom… ). They kept a close watch on both mom and baby for the week.
On Friday, July 16 during another ultrasound, it was determined that the blood flow to the placenta was reversing. They had to deliver that day. So Avery Rae Haiar made her debut at 2:14 p.m., weighing 1 lb. 12 oz. As her dad put it, “She just couldn’t wait to meet me, I guess.”
This little family has a long road ahead of them, but they are receiving wonderful care at Avera’s NICU. Maddie was finally released from the hospital on Wednesday of this week, but it is very likely that Avery will be there until her due date, which was October 13. There will be a lot of bills, and those bills could go on for years. Dan and Maddie are people that would do anything for others. Maddie is very dear to my heart, and I love this family so much, and I’m asking for you to consider helping them, if you are able. Thank you for your consideration!
