6 members of the the Gaplu clan, Yolŋu nation (Zelda Gurruwiwi, Lena Gurruwiwi, Selma Gurruwiwi, Rachel Dhurrkay, Tilly Dhurrkay & Dorothy Dhurrkay) are currently on Bundjalung country visiting loved ones and doing big cultural work — but they don’t have enough money to get back to their home in North-East Arnhem Land.

We’re raising funds to buy a reliable 4WD and cover the immediate costs to get the Gurruwiwis home safely and keep them connected to Country. This family are respected cultural custodians and Elders — getting them back to their homelands is about more than travel: it’s about cultural responsibility, ceremony, and caring for Country.

What we’re raising $15,000 for

• Vehicle purchase (reliable 4WD suitable for Arnhem Land roads): $10,000

• Fuel & food for the return trip + initial maintenance & spare parts: $3,000

• Minor repairs, safety gear (tyres, battery), and contingency: $2,000

Why this matters

• The Gurruwiwi family carry knowledge, song, and ceremony tied to their homelands. Their presence on Country is crucial for cultural practice and community wellbeing.

• A community-owned vehicle will allow them to travel to get home but also be used for ceremony, care for sacred sites, and continue cultural work — not just a one-off ticket home.

• Any extra funds (if we raise more) will go toward vehicle upkeep, fuel for ongoing cultural travel, and supporting community-led activities on Country.
