Help the Franco Family in a time of need - Emergency Move
Donation protected
Aloha, my name is Allyson. I am the granddaughter of Steve and Alice Franco and daughter to Kanoe Franco. My family and I have been coming to terms with losing our home of 25 years, which feels like going through the five stages of grief, except this time it’s with losing a house. I've never cried more than I have since the passing of my aunt over a decade ago. Our home, which kept us here in Kailua where my kūpuna have lived for eight generations, has always been my family's safe haven on Keolu Drive.
In June we received confirmation that my grandma received a home through Hawaiian Homes, which would relocate us to Maui in August 2025. We were ecstatic, finally having a home to call our own. We started to plan for the move, looking at downsizing and dumping a lot of things here at home and packing up within the next year. That thought was quickly overshadowed by this news we received 10 days later by our former property manager. A month ago, we were notified that the owners were moving to a new property manager, leading to a home inspection of our home and, a few weeks ago, a 60-day notice to vacate. Now, my family is stressed and depressed, cutting short our hopes for our last year in this house. We're facing a bittersweet transition before our move to Maui, starting anew in a home my grandma prayed for decades, and being forced to leave this home we hoped to have another year in leaving on our own terms.
Every moment, I'm strategizing for my family's future, as is my family figuring out our next moves. Many don't realize how hard it is to afford homes in Hawaiʻi where rent is beyond many people’s reach nowadays with the type of financial requirements it has. Finding a place that accepts our dog is tough, and when we do, it's expensive. I'm now processing the reality of being "priced out of paradise”, a feeling many locals experience far too often in today’s time. This post is a call for help: if you know of a temporary place for my family for the next 11 months, or can offer support with our move, please let me know. We have 25 years of belongings to sort through in just 50 days and need to find storage until we start our pack to Maui.
The funding from this GoFundMe will help with moving our belongings, finding temporary storage for next year and help with general housing expenses until we can get ourselves financially stable again. Mahalo nui for your consideration, aloha.
