Over the past few days, my brother’s family has been pulled back into an incredibly frightening and emotional situation. On Saturday, January 3rd, Kali was airlifted to Boston after her condition suddenly worsened. Her LVAD flow kept dropping, leaving her dizzy, weak, and collapsing. The Ludlow Fire Department brought her to Baystate to stabilize her for a life flight to Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Watching their mom taken away in an ambulance has been heartbreaking for the kids. Theyre scared, confused, and struggling with being separated from their mom. Kali remains in Boston as doctors work to stabilize her and determine next steps. From what has been explained to them, her LVAD has shifted and is restricting blood flow, while the right side of her heart is failing to pump with enough pressure to support her circulation. Despite ongoing efforts to balance medication and hydration, her condition remains fragile. Based on the medical team’s recommendations, the family is now moving forward with the heart transplant process. The last several days have been a whirlwind of meetings with transplant teams, doctors, nurses, social workers, and psychiatrists, all required steps in this process. If Kali can’t be stabilized enough to return home, she may need to remain hospitalized until a donor heart becomes available. My brother has been out of work and traveling back and forth to Boston to help support Kali so she isn’t facing this alone. Asking for help is incredibly hard, but the financial strain of medical bills, travel, and daily life has become overwhelming.
