I am the co-founder of Rights & Roots, an organization supporting Amazonian communities defending their lands and ecosystems.
In the months of January and February we have raised and delivered funds to provide essential supplies so that the communities could sustain themselves during their occupation to revoke Decree 12600 that was aiming to privatize Tapajós river. Thanks to your contributions communities were able to mantain themselves for more than a month and they suceed in their call to action to the goverment, and Decree was revoked. Together, we made history!
Now, we continue our work alongside the Borari community through a guardianship project that will support them in documenting illegal activities taking place within their territory. This process is essential for advancing the territorial demarcation they have been fighting for since 2008.
Territorial demarcation is a critical legal process to protect Indigenous ancestral lands from illegal extraction, land grabbing, and environmental destruction. Without it, communities remain highly vulnerable, with limited legal tools to defend their territory.
Your support will directly contribute to strengthening the community’s capacity to monitor, document, and defend their land.
Funds raised will be used for:
- A boat engine, which is essential for mobility across the river. It is a key piece of political infrastructure that allows the community to patrol their territory, monitor illegal activities, and respond in real time.
- A second-hand drone, to document environmental damage and illegal activities from above, providing visual evidence that can support legal processes and advocacy efforts.
- A second hand smartphone, necessary to operate the drone, download monitoring applications, and improve communication and coordination within the territory.
- A geographer, who will support the technical documentation required for the demarcation process. This includes mapping the territory, gathering spatial data, and producing evidence that can be used in legal claims and institutional procedures.
By supporting this project, you are not only contributing to the protection of the caribbean Amazon, you are helping strengthen a broader movement for Indigenous rights, environmental justice, and the rights of Nature.
