A few weeks ago, my cousin suddenly fell gravely ill and was diagnosed with encephalitis, a serious inflammation of the brain. It started with convulsions and stroke-like episodes that left him disoriented and in pain. As his condition worsened, he began attacking others and himself.

Since then, his condition has deteriorated. He is now in the ICU, connected to an artificial respirator to help him breathe. He cannot move or speak, and he is fed through tubes because he can no longer eat on his own. The only movement he can manage is to open his eyes, a small but powerful reminder that he’s still fighting.

His family is doing everything they can, but the medical costs are overwhelming. They live on a very limited income and cannot afford the growing expenses for his hospital stay, medications, and critical care. Every day in the ICU is expensive, and his treatment is expected to take a long time before he can begin recovery.
