I am excited & deeply honored to be one of 10 individuals chosen from over 100 applicants for the SEED Exchange, a global initiative by REPRA Health. This unique opportunity will allow me to expand my reach to Ghana, collaborating with midwives, doulas, and birthworkers in the diaspora to improve maternal health and social outcomes across the African diaspora through cultural immersion and shared learning.
I am Tamara Akua Hunter—a mother, wife, perinatal mental health therapist, and postpartum doula. My personal experiences with infertility, reproductive loss, postpartum anxiety, and depression inspired me to support others in advocating for their reproductive and mental wellness. This led me to provide postpartum doula services, coaching, individual therapy, and support groups for women/birthing people, navigating womb challenges, fertility issues, perinatal loss, pregnancy and the stages of motherhood, including postpartum mental health.
The SEED Exchange, designed for birth workers focuses on uplifting girls and women across the African diaspora, includes a curated 8-day itinerary with immersive cultural experiences, collaborative learning with Ghana’s maternal health system, and networking events. Highlights include site engagements with maternal health partners, a guided tour of Cape Coast’s historical sites and birthing centers, and a community health screening.
Our reproductive rights cannot wait. Now more than ever, we must heal our communities through advocacy, collaboration, and sustainability. As Michelle Obama stated, “Communities and countries and ultimately the world are only as strong as the health of their women.”
Reproductive justice, perinatal mental health, and postpartum care are my professional mission and lived experience. I am dedicated to ensuring that all women and birthing people have access to the support and care they deserve. Your support would help cover travel, program costs, lodging, and other expenses as I take part in this life-changing journey to strengthen our global community and advance Black maternal health.
“I have found that among its other benefits, giving liberates the soul of the giver”. Maya Angelou
