Help Sustain the Hadzabe Tribe with Corn Donations

Donation protected

Hello, my name is Tara Pogoda.
I really appreciate you taking the time to read my GoFundMe page.

I first met the Hadzabe people who live in the bush of Tanzania, Africa, and local guide, Alex Puwale, who lives in Karatu, Tanzania, in January of 2023 on a humanitarian trip.

Once I had spent a day with the Hadzabe, walking through the bush to find the watering holes of animals that the women collect their drinking water supply from, going into the huts and the caves they sleep in, shooting the bow and arrows at targets that the men and boys graciously offered me (the Hadzabe hunters are expert shots!), and learning the story and needs of the Hadzabe by talking to them after their day's hunt, with Alex translating, I decided to do something to help their situation.

To give you some background, the Hadzabe are a government-protected hunter-gatherer indigenous ethnic group that live in the bush of the Lake Eyasi basin in Tanzania. As descendants of Tanzania’s aboriginal, pre-Bantu expansion hunter-gatherer population, they have occupied their current territory for tens of thousands of years, with relatively little modification to their basic way of life until the past hundred years.

The loss of their previously government-protected land, to be used for profit from taxes and fees of tourism, is rapidly depleting their hunting and foraging grounds and thus endangering the way they survive.

Food support is urgently needed to sustain the current generation of this culture, which is truly an ancient treasure!

Donating money to buy bags of un-hulled corn that the women in the tribe hand-grind and turn into a porridge called ugali (what we know as hominy or polenta) is the direct food support you can help me provide.

Since my first trip in 2023 and throughout 2024, I have furnished funds to Alex so he can purchase the corn and deliver it to the bush. One 50# bag of corn currently costs $75 USD.

The family tribe of 60 people (women, children, and men) that I am feeding is sustained by approximately 12 bags/mo. — $900 USD/mo. The goal is 6 months of food for $5400.

Can you please help?

Give what you can!

Every dollar is greatly appreciated and goes 100% to buying corn, as Alex provides the bush delivery, and when I do visit, I pay for my own trip expenses.

If you would like to participate in this cross-cultural interaction and meet the Hadzabe tribe yourself someday, let me know.

We’ll talk about the upcoming trips 2025-2026 that I'm scheduling.

On these trips, we will also take a safari to the National Parks: Serengeti, Tarangire, Ngorongoro, Lake Manyara, and Arusha.

Plus, for the climbers and beachgoers, Mt. Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar Island are nearby must-see adventures!

Thank you for your support.
