Help Sustain Camden, NJ Writers House

Tax deductible
Help preserve poetry in one of the poorest cities in America.

The Nick Virgilio Haiku Association and Writers House in Camden, New Jersey is surviving the pandemic like the rest of us, but it's hard and we need your help. NVHA has transitioned to online programming in order to adapt, but needs donation support now to remain sustainable and better serve the community.

NVHA's mission is important to our community. Our programs promote literacy, we host the Mighty Writers distribution of food and diapers at the Writers House, we run programs to address food insecurity, and bring services to the Camden community where needs are great. Right now we are in the midst of our annual youth contest that attracts thousands of entries from kids ages grades 7-12, making scholarship awards to 6 winners.

Soon, in-person events will begin to open back up. NVHA plans to expand its programs from the internet to the real world again, connecting local Camden residents with the international haiku poetry community and foster education, creativity, and wellness. Please help sustain us until then.

You can find out more about the wonderful services that NVHA provides on our website.

Here is a list of some of the current programs that will benefit from this fundraiser.

HAIKU IN ACTION
This series offers prompts to facilitate new ways to write haiku and publishes the best of submissions on our social media pages. Take a look at our Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter pages for inspiration and submit your own poetry for a chance to be a featured.

MONDAY NIGHT MINDFULNESS
Join us our hour long biweekly workshop focusing on mindful meditation practice and writing exercises that support them. Lead by certified mindfulness instructor Amber McGuigan, we will explore a new theme each month focused on the relationship between writing and mindfulness as well as take part in mindfulness related relaxation techniques, all from the comfort of your home. By doing this NVHA hopes to support mindfulness for stress relief, mental health, and creative writing.

THE VIRGILIO VIRTUAL HAIKU OPEN MIC
Our bimonthly virtual open mic features both local and internationally renowned haiku poets and a chance for you to show your best work.

ART UNBOXED
Our series of interactive writing workshops and instructional cooking videos combine haiku and food. NVHA is determined to address food insecurity in Camden, NJ with Art Unboxed short YouTube videos (Longer than a TikTok and shorter than FoodTV) teaching people how to use the food in their farm distribution boxes, combined with ingredients available at neighborhood corner stores, to make inexpensive nutritious food for their families. Each video corresponds with a writing prompt and invitation to share haiku and meditative writing with the community  (on the Nick Virgilio YouTube channel).
