We are Makarī Rishi and Narasimha Dass of The Vvlcan Haus, a collective of artists and mystics based in East Hollywood, CA.
The neighborhood of East Hollywood has been hit extremely hard by the current economic situation and homelessness has exploded in our community.
The city shuffles the disenfranchised around from corner to corner, alley to alley in order to try to make it seem like something is being done but within hours the camps spring back up. They refuse to try to get to the heart of this incredibly complex problem.
Since we arrived in the neighborhood we have done our best to feed, clothe and restore dignity to people we see who are in need but as artists who live off of our creativity it can be difficult and honestly frustrating to make even the smallest difference. We moved here from San Francisco where we were also doing this work but LA is MUCH bigger and the need for assistance more urgent.
What we need to tackle a bigger chunk of this issue is resources. We are a “boots on the ground” type of mission. We walk the streets and alleys in our community looking for the hardest hit and most desperate people in need of help (usually women w/children and all gender youths). The problem is that living off of your creativity takes time away from being able to dedicate a substantial amount of time to this arduous mission. Which is one we choose to embrace to help better our planet and all humans.
During one trip we came across a 28yr old woman in a wheelchair, without the use of her legs who had just given birth via cesarean section and with still fresh wound dressings was cast out on the street in front of the hospital with no pants and absolutely no aftercare whatsoever. When we asked her what she needed she replied “a breast pump” because she was still lactating after just give birth a day before. We spent all day with her, feeding her, clothing her and trying to get her into a safe spot so she could heal and try and see her first new born child.
Many of us have a serious misconception about Hollywood, yes there is a lot of wealth but it is directly juxtaposed by incredible poverty. People come here to chase their dreams only to be chewed up and spit out literally on the streets. This is statement is a direct quote from this amazing young lady we just spoke about.
Your donation will get us closer to be able to spend more time out in the field and digging more deeply into a genuine solution for those on critical footings instead of offering a band aid in the form of handing them just a few dollars.
It takes hours, sometimes days to get someone placed in a safe spot where they can begin to walk the road to recovery and stability. We also have a food, water and crucial supplies distribution plan in place so we can offer momentary comfort to those in our community who are not in as critical emergency situations.
Again this requires time and resources.
A HUGE piece of our spiritual path is that of seva (service) to others. We truly believe that we are all connected and that we will not be free until all of us are free.
As artists we are prepared to offer some of our items to those who support our mission.
Please share this with anyone and everyone who may be interested in our perspective on this issue.
