Help Support Our New Family

Donation protected
Our new amazing baby boy, the beautiful Leonidas, has been diagnosed with Biliary Atresia, a disease which essentially renders the liver non-functioning. This has several effects:

- Jaundice - the body can’t excrete the waste products filtered by the liver.

- Blood Clotting Problems - a huge job of the liver is to make the ‘glue’ that sticks the blood together when a clot is needed.

- Malnutrition - the liver is vital to ensuring food isndigested properly.

Leonidas at just a few weeks old.

Biliary atresia is a very rare life threatening problem, present from birth, which makes diagnosis very difficult. Our little Leonidas was born well, and doing great over the first few weeks, even getting into the first of many England Rugby outfits!

However, as time progressed, Leonidas started to slow in his growth, and he was noticed to have slight jaundice. This was thought to be mild and not worrying.

Over the following days he deteriorated and was rushed to hospital, first at Dorset County Hospital, and then via ambulance to Oxford John Radcliffe and, ultimately, to King’s College  Hospital London.

Our family in King’s College Hospital, London.

This disease has sadly resulted in two catastrophic problems:

1- A bleed on the brain (brain haemorrhage) - this is a result of the liver being unable to make the clotting factors needed

2- A major operation at King’s College Hospital to reverse the biliary atresia.

All of this has taken a huge part of our lives, leaving us unable to work and has added hugely to our costs of living, as we will be travelling to both King’s in London, and Southampton Neurosurgical Centre, multiple times a week for the foreseeable future.

We are from Dorset, so this travelling takes a lot of time, especially with a young baby who has just had an operation.

We are asking for support to help with the very basic essentials of life - rent, food, and transport - as this has left us unable to work.

We appreciate any help that anyone can give, as this will allow us to be there for our baby boy and each other. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

All excess money that is donated that we don’t use for our essentials will be donated to the King’s College Hospital Charity and in the future when we are back up and running, we will be running a series of events to highlight the condition of biliary atresia and raise further funds for the charity!
