Hi my name is Jennie and I'm fundraising for Evie-Mhairi and her family.
In February last year, beautiful Evie-Mhairi came into the world far too soon - at just 24 weeks and 4 days gestation, over three and a half months early.
Weighing 1lb 9oz (less than a bag of sugar), this tiny warrior spent the first 209 days (7 months) of her life in NICU and the paediatrics ward, with several visits to Great Ormond Street Hospital for vital procedures - including one to close a valve in her heart.
It was an incredibly stressful and emotional time for her parents, Briony and Marcus, and their whole family. But after many long months of hospital stays , surgeries, and countless worry, Evie finally came home in September last year.
Since then Evie has continued to show unbelievable strength. She needed a feeding tube for quite some time and has been on home oxygen ever since. Now at 20 months old (17 months corrected), she still requires oxygen at night, despite everyone's efforts to help her breathe independently.
When she was much smaller, Evie was diagnosed with Laryngomalacia (floppy larynx) - a condition where the soft tissues of the voice box collapse inward during inhalation, partially blocking the airway. Doctors had hoped she would grow out of it, but after a recent investigative procedure under general anesthetic, it was discovered that her windpipe is very narrow.
This means Evie will now need to major airway surgery - a laryngotracheal reconstruction - to rebuild her upper airway. After surgery she'll be placed back in intensive care and put into an induced coma to allow her new airways to heal. There is also the possibility she may need a temporary tracheotomy.
As you can imagine, this is a very difficult and worrying time for Briony and Marcus. Briony is unable to work as she is Evie's full-time carer, and Marcus is a self-employed electrician who will need to take time off to be by Evie's side. During her recovery, they will be staying at parents accommodation at Grwat Ormond Street Hospital, living of takeaways and sandwiches while they support their little girl.
We're asking for any donation, big or small, to help cover their living expenses during this time- so that their only focus can be on helping Evie heal.
Every penny truly helps and would mean the world to this brave little family.
Thank you so much for reading, sharing, and supporting in any way you can.
