Help My Family After the Sudden Loss of My Stepdad
Hello everyone,
My name is Keenan. I’m an active-duty Marine in the USMC, currently stationed 1,800 miles away from my hometown, Memphis TN. I’m reaching out with a heavy heart to ask for help for my mom and little sister during the hardest time our family has ever faced.
Seven years ago, my mom survived surgery to remove a stage-3, golf-ball-sized brain tumor. By the grace of God, she made it through without major complications, but the tumor took her sense of smell and some cognitive functions. She’s been a fighter ever since—living independently, raising my little sister, and pushing forward despite constant struggles.
My stepdad was her rock. Ten years ago, he received a heart transplant that gave him a second chance at life. He poured everything into our family. Tragically, two months ago, he and my mom were T-boned in a car accident when someone ran a stop sign. My stepdad never fully recovered. He was hospitalized for heart rejection, and just when we thought he was getting better, his heart gave out. We lost him suddenly and unexpectedly.
We’ve never asked for help before, until now.
Right now, my mom (who is legally disabled and unable to work most jobs) and my little sister (who just graduated high school) are grieving and struggling to keep food on the table. My sister had to drop out of college because she couldn’t afford it and stayed home to care for Mom. I’m doing everything I can from across the country, but being a active-duty marine limits how much I can send or do.
On top of everything, we still haven’t received proper compensation from the accident. The recent government shutdown has paused my mom’s SNAP benefits and disability payments—assistance she depends on and qualifies for. Without that support, my family is at real risk of losing everything.
My little sister is working multiple jobs straight out of high school. I’m sending what I can from my military paycheck. But it’s not enough. The bills are piling up, the fridge is getting empty, and the grief makes every day feel impossible.
We’re not asking for a handout—we’re asking for a hand up. Any donation, no matter how small, will help cover rent, groceries, utilities, and funeral expenses so my mom and sister can breathe again. And If you’re unable to give, please consider sharing this to any platform you have. A share goes just as far.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you. Your kindness means more than words can say. God bless you, and Happy Veterans Day.
