Help Sunil's Family Secure a Safe Home

HELP SUNIL & HIS FAMILY BUY A SAFE HOME OF THEIR OWN!

The antidote to feeling helpless is to help someone else.

Due to an unscrupulous landlord, Sunil’s family of five is now living in a single closet-sized room with no toilet, no shower, and no running water. They can BUY a safe, permanent home on the Ganges–but they need our help by the end of November.

You can see a video here of their current 8' by 12' room shared by 5 people and all their earthly possessions.

Many of you know Sunil–warm-hearted, kind, selfless, funny, and smart as a whip. Self-taught and self-made (after just a few days in school-literally!), Sunil has carried on the sacred tradition of Varanasi boatmen with integrity. His home base along the Ganges River is Meer Ghat, just like his grandfather before him.

However, his luck with housing has been downright cursed.

  • In 2018, his rented apartment (along with 160 other buildings ) was demolished to make way for a corridor to the new Golden Temple. (and it's not as if he got bought out!)

  • In 2021, the cement roof of his rented apartment crashed down into the rooms–it's a miracle no one was harmed.

Now, in early 2025, the modest apartment Sunil was renting (one small room and a kitchen) was repossessed by the bank because his landlord defaulted on his loan.

Sunil, his wife Arti, their two young children (Jenny, 7, and Ganesh, 9), and his nephew Aryan (who he generously took in without question when Sunil's brother died during COVID) were unceremoniously kicked out by police and left to scramble.

The 5 of them landed in a small room (8 feet by 12 feet for 5 people and all their possessions). It's a closet, really, with nowhere to cook, no toilet to use, no shower--no running water at all. They rely on the kindness of a nearby guesthouse to let them use a toilet and to bathe. They can only cook at a relative's house.

Imagine having a closet to sleep in and every single time you have to use the facilities, day or night, you must walk to a hotel. It's not safe.

Sunil has managed to scrimp and save almost $17,000 USD--no small feat on an honest boatman's wages. He has secured a loan for $5500 USD, and he needs $9000 USD more by mid-November 2025 to finally own a home in Meer Ghat.

Opportunities to buy houses in Meer Ghat are extremely rare, which is why he had to take a leap of faith when this chance arose.

Sunil is a pillar of this community, and it is a dream to finally be safe in his own home here. His young children deserve a stable place to grow–to eat nourishing meals, do homework, and to actually be children.

This is a fork in the road--a chance to make real, lasting, generational change.

Please help Sunil change his own luck with a home of his own on his precious Meer Ghat.

He must secure this funding by the end of November or else he loses not only the opportunity for this house, but he will lose the $600 USD "Good Faith Deposit" he put down.

If $9000 is not raised by the end of November, this money raised will still go to Sunil to save for another opportunity.
