Friends! We need your support! Marica, Kris and Tina, local labor and delivery nurses, are going on a medical mission trip to help babies!
Birth asphyxia, or failure to initiate or sustain spontaneous breathing at birth, contributes to 27%-30% of neonatal deaths in resource limited countries. We can change this! The Helping Babies Breathe program (HBB) was launched in 2010 and teaches basic neonatal resuscitation skills. It has been shown to reduce early neonatal mortality by up to 47% and fresh stillbirths by up to 24%.
To put it simply, when a baby is born not breathing in these low resource countries, they are often mistaken for having already died. They do not understand that the baby simply needs air! Basic ventilation with a bag-mask or even their mouth would change this!
We are heading to Sumatra in Western Indonesia August 27th to teach their midwives and birth attendants how to help babies breathe. We would like to leave them with as many supplies as possible so that they can return to their villages and teach others.
Each neonatal manikin is $175 and infant ambu bags are approximately $20 a piece. Please consider donating and help the babies of Sumatra take their lifesaving first breath!
Much love! Marica, Kris and Tina
