UPDATE: Steve will be released on probation Tuesday, November 28, 2017!
As you may be aware, our friend, Steve Horowitz, has been incarcerated in various Michigan prisons for the past 18 years. Steve’s sister Nanci and I have been working to obtain his release. Steve has served a disproportionately long sentence for his crime of buying drugs with the intent to sell. We are now thrilled to learn that Steve will finally have his freedom. He’ll be able to be the productive member of his community he has long sought to be.
(Steve and I during my October 2016 visit)
Steve has been a model prisoner for 18 years. He is an avid reader, consuming several books a week during his incarceration. He has tutored his fellow inmates, worked in the prison library, and has been on a spiritual journey returning to his religious roots. In addition, Steve stays in shape by running several miles daily.
A condition of Steve’s release is that he lives with Nanci and Nanci’s husband Jerry in West Bloomfield. Nanci and Jerry are older, but both are still working out of necessity. They do not have the means to financially support Steve beyond providing a home. Upon Steve’s release at age 66, he will be working a temporary full time job so he can be self-sufficient, but also seeking a permanent job.
After all these years, Steve has absolutely no money…nothing. Steve will need money for food, clothing, transportation, a TV, a cell phone, a used computer, and a few other things that make up life’s basic necessities.
To help Steve in his return to freedom and in his adjustment to this very different world, I have set up this GoFundMe campaign. I invite all to pitch in to help Steve get back on his feet. Please consider how your support can aid in Steve’s re-entry. Over the years, many of you have inquired how Steve is doing and asked what you could do to help. Some of you wrote letters on Steve’s behalf, others sent money, books, or paid for magazine subscriptions.

Now is the time Steve really needs your help!
Whatever you are able to give today to help Steve will make a big difference in his life right now. Steve will be so grateful, and I am confident he will make the most of his long-sought freedom. Thank you.
