Hello, my name is Katie O and I am the proud conductor that keeps Soul Food to the People "FEED THE PEOPLE" MISSION MOVING! Soul Food to the People is a registered 501 (c) (3) nonprofit based out of the Prospect Lefferts Garden section of Brooklyn, New York. Our life's work is providing hungry New Yorkers with traditional, foot tapping, knee slapping, hand clapping, tongue talking, plate licking, soul shouting, down home SOUL FOOD made with Grandma's love and served with her hugs . When the world shut down in March 2020 due to COVID-19, I turned my restaurant into a community kitchen. The thought of all the food pantries, food banks, and soup kitchens being closed stayed on my mind and heavy on my heart. So I sprung into action immediately and prepared an amazing Thanksgiving style meal for over 1,500 food insecure New Yorkers. There was such a need and high demand for this type of SOUL LOVE. We continued this every week for months which led to the the birth of our baby SOUL FOOD TO THE PEOPLE. Since 2020 we have fed over 250,000 HUNGRY NEW YORKERS. Yes, over 250,000 and counting, trust me at times I pinch myself to make sure this is real! I don't know how we do it but WE DO and DO NOT PLAN ON STOPPING!
Every week, we serve free, restaurant style meals that mirror the food we serve at Katie O Soul Restaurant. The goal is not only feed the people but feed the people the same food that we serve our customers and with dignity, love, and respect. We are excited to have you join us and support our upcoming HOLIDAY 2025 COMMUNITY EVENTS!
Our immediate priority:
(a) Financial Love to help us provide over 1,000 meals at our annual Thanksgiving "FEED THE PEOPLE" RESTAURANT STYLE SIT-DOWN COMMUNITY DINNER being hosted on Thursday, November 27, 2025. Last year we fed 1,000 hungry New Yorkers and this year I AM DETERMINED TO SURPASS THAT NUMBER. With your love that will surely be possible.
Our next priority:
(b) Support for our annual Community Supermarket being held on Saturday, December 20, 2025 at Katie O Soul Food Restaurant. Community members are invited to grocery shop and pick up the items that they would need to make their holiday special. The best part it is all FREE. Our last Community Supermarket was nothing short of amazing, seeing all the smiles and joy on people faces, for us that is what the HOLIDAY IS ABOUT!
Further Down the Line:
(c) Help us repair our food delivery van
Our ultimate goal is to expand our efforts to distribute free, restaurant-style food in each Brooklyn neighborhood that is severely impacted by food insecurity. It is our vision that every hungry Brooklyn resident can look forward to Saturdays, knowing they have delicious food and good company waiting for them at their local Soul Food to the People food distribution center. Currently, we are working towards repairing our food delivery van, which is out of commission, to allow us to reach as many people as possible.
A bit about us:
Growing up in Brooklyn, I would spend hours in the kitchen with my late Grandma, Peaches, cooking home-cooked soul food for our family and the community. Grandma Peaches always said "food was love", and spreading this love through providing warm, comforting meals became my life's mission. I opened Katie O Soul Food in 2014, just a few blocks from her childhood home. In the nearly 11 years since the restaurant opened, they've gained a reputation both for their delicious home-cooked soul food and for the warm, loving community that you’ll find at Katie O’s.
In March 2020, the number of hungry New Yorkers surged, and my team and I sprang into action. As the restaurant was closed during the New York government lockdown, Katie converted Katie O’s into a food bank, soup kitchen and meals on wheels, delivering free home-cooked food by any means necessary. To this day, we continue to feed the people and spread love, it's the Brooklyn way!
