URGENT: Help Somali small businesses pay March rent, avoid eviction, and keep organizing!

Because of Operation Metro Surge and Trump’s racist campaign of terror against the Minneapolis community, dozens of businesses owned by Somali-Americans at the Karmel Mall in Minneapolis are struggling to keep their doors open.

In February, following two shutdowns of the mall organized by business owners on January 23rd (for the statewide shutdown) and January 30th (the national shutdown), leaders at the Mall launched an organization to continue fighting together: Neighbors United.

Your urgent support is needed in order for Neighbors United to continue organizing and fighting for more support from city and state government in order to truly recover from ICE’s terror.

Neighbors United then launched a petition with three demands:

In January alone, the City of Minneapolis estimates over $200 million in losses due to racist ICE terror, including $47 million in lost wages and $81 million in losses for small businesses. Governor Walz is proposing a meager $10M in loans to only those businesses who make over $200K a year. Because many of our businesses make less than $200k they are excluded from eligibility. We demand that the state dramatically expand its relief program with direct grants – not just loans – to immigrant, Black, and brown small businesses who lost income because of ICE terror, including businesses that make less than $200k annually.

We demand that Governor Walz stop all evictions now for renters and small businesses! Governor Walz has the power to sign this into law immediately by declaring a peacetime state of emergency. Many families have not been able to work because ICE is terrorizing our families. Families should be protected and allowed to stay in their home.
