We are raising funds for Sierra, a 34-year-old disabled woman on SSDI facing housing insecurity. Sierra has EDS, POTS, MCAS, migraine, small fiber neuropathy, epilepsy, Alpha Gal Syndrome, ME/CFS with severe post-exertional malaise, and narcolepsy with cataplexy. She recently lost housing escaping domestic violence, and the person she was most recently renting from raised the rent and became aggressive, threatening Sierra and her 2 emotional support cats, Tigger and Roo.
Sierra experiences high chronic pain and extreme fatigue that make it exceptionally challenging to meet day-to-day needs. She previously spent most of her time at doctor's appointments or sleeping. When trying to get into shelters, she is continually rejected because of her physical limitations, needing to carry epi pens and emergency seizure medications on her person, or the fact that she takes medications 2x a day not 1x a day. She has been on a housing list with the homeless connection line for two years. The mechanism allowing a soft top cover on her car is broken, leaving the back open and exposed to the elements; this repair is not affordable either. Sierra has worked so incredibly hard to survive conditions that many don't. Everyone has told Sierra "it gets better," but our systems just aren't designed for disabled people like her to survive. Let's do what we can to change that. Thank you for your time and support <3
-Liz and Monica
Background: Liz, Monica, and Sierra were all strangers until Liz and Monica both happened to respond to Sierra's facebook post on DisabledRVA on Tuesday, asking for help packing up all her things and moving them out of her room amidst threats from her landlord, a task that was nowhere near physically accessible for Sierra to accomplish alone. After Liz, Monica, and Sierra chipped away at it most of the day, Liz called in help from her friend Eric to help get the rest of Sierra's things moved out. After Liz and Monica left, Sierra's landlord resumed her aggression and Monica returned to help protect her. Sierra had a seizure later that evening, and Monica and Eric were there to support what could have otherwise been a more dangerous situation. Monica was able to house Sierra Tuesday through Thursday, but Sierra is in need of immediate housing tonight and onward.
Note: Monica is listed as the beneficiary because in order for Sierra to not lose SSDI, the money can not be put in her bank account. Monica will have to obtain cash to give directly to Sierra.
