FROM THE FARM TO THE STREET: A BLACK FARMING FAMILY IS RAISING FUNDS TO TRAIN BLACK MEN AND YOUTH IN AGRIBUSINESS TO LESSEN CRIME AND MAKE OUR COMMUNITY DECENT AND SAFE.

"On August 21, 2026, Brother Shelton Muhammad and his sons at Muhammad Family Farm, located in Southampton County, Virginia, launched a fundraising campaign to raise an initial $200,000. These funds will provide a stipend for Black men and youth training in the production, processing, marketing, and sales of farm products; establish farm stores in the Black community to provide higher-quality, safe, and healthier food; and contract with Black farmers to produce products to help sustain their farms."

When Black men and youth are unemployed and can’t find a job, it forces them to commit survival crimes, sell drugs, guns, or even themselves out of sheer necessity. They may even try to escape their reality by using illicit drugs or excessive drinking of alcohol.

Black farmers can play a critical role in helping our community with the employment crisis facing Black men and youth, ending food insecurity, and making our community a decent and safe place to live.

Today, in Southampton County, VA, the Muhammad Family Farm launched a powerful fundraising campaign with a clear mission: teach, train, and employ Black men and youth in agribusiness. By reconnecting our young people to the land, this initiative directly fights local crime, brings fresh, healthy food to underserved neighborhoods, and creates a foundation for stable, thriving Black families.

Our goal is to raise $200,000 by April 30, 2027. Every dollar raised directly powers this initiative and will provide stipends for Black men and youth while they complete their agricultural training, as well as funding vital equipment—including raw farming supplies, vegetable processing machines, secure storage units, team uniforms, and sales and marketing.
