I’m organizing this fundraiser on behalf of my dear friend Shelly, who is currently escaping a deeply dangerous domestic violence situation. Shelly has endured more than anyone should ever have to. She has suffered numerous physical injuries, and heartbreakingly, recently lost a pregnancy due to the ongoing stress and abuse she’s been living through. Her abuser also destroyed her vehicle and took all of her cash, leaving her with no financial access and very limited ability to safely leave. For a long time, she was trapped in an environment where leaving wasn’t even physically possible, her keys were withheld, her transportation was disabled, and her freedom was controlled. Now that she has finally gotten out, she is safe from the abuse, but she has nothing. No stable place to stay, no transportation, and no resources to begin again.
Shelly is a mother, and her child is currently safe with Shelly’s mother while Shelly works to rebuild her life and create a safe, stable home. Everything she is doing right now is for that child and for a future free from fear. I’ve known Shelly for around 6 years, and she is truly one of the most kind, loving, and genuine people I know. It’s devastating to see someone so good go through something so painful. She has worked so hard to overcome challenges in her life, only to have everything torn apart by abuse. She deserves safety. She deserves peace. She deserves a fresh start, just like anyone would.
Right now, we are asking for any support possible. Donations will go toward helping Shelly secure safe housing, basic necessities, and transportation so she can find and maintain stable employment. Transportation is especially critical! If anyone has a reliable, low cost vehicle they would be willing to donate or sell affordably, it would make an enormous difference in her ability to rebuild. I know times are hard for everyone, but even the smallest contribution can help change Shelly’s life. And if you’re unable to donate, sharing this with your network of people would mean just as much.
