JUNE:
Shea was admitted to Children’s Hospital of Minnesota after he had been having trouble with stomach pains and issues along with having a hard time with eating. In a short few weeks, he lost 20 pounds and they were able to get Shea into to see a GI specialist while there. When the appointment arrived they found that he was severely dehydrated, anemic and also tested positive for a bacterial infection. A completed laundry list of tests, blood work and biopsies were taken.
On Monday, June 14th, they learned that Shea was diagnosed with Crohn’ Disease. Shea was then given an iron transfusion and started on steroids. He will likely have to be on medicine and receive medical treatment for the rest of his life.
His biological medications retails at $6,000 for 2 doses. As he starts treatment, he need these weekly. For anyone who has experienced a large or unexpected medical event, you know that insurance is a BATTLE. It will likely offset some of that retail price IF approved, and that is not the only medicine and medical treatment Shea will need. Shea’s doctor is presenting the severity of his case to a panel explaining that he will likely need to continue these drugs for the rest of his life.
JULY Update:
Over the course of the month Shea has been pain and adjusting to what will be his new normal for the rest of his life. During this time, Shea has had multiple appointments for pain management, treatment regimens and medical procedures. On July 24th, Shea was experiencing more pain and discomfort and was brought to the emergency room. After what seemed like hours, he was once again admitted to Children’s Hospital of Minnesota for ongoing care and treatment.
They discovered Shea’s appendix had burst and his severe discomfort was because of the growing infection. Due to his weakened immune system and medicine given to help combat his Crohn’s, they were not able to go in for immediate surgery.
Over the course of the following days, the team at Children’s Hospital of Minnesota have been working tirelessly to keep the infections and pain under control for Shea. The hours, days and weeks ahead are met with uncertainty and hopes of regaining some strength and that the medicine will work it’s power. However, Kim, Jeff and Shea will be at Children’s Hospital of Minnesota for the foreseeable future for medical care and treatment.
So many of us have benefited from Kim's amazing care for our little ones and the joy she brings into friend's and families lives. As a parent, I know it takes a village and Kim has been instrumental in the care of our children, now I'm hopeful we can return the favor and help be one for her and her family.
Please consider donating anything you can to help offset the large medical bills that Kim and her family will be facing.
Thank you in advance!
