My name is Sharon, and reaching out for help is something I never imagined I’d have to do. For over a year, I’ve been without a place to truly call home. In October, I was blessed to receive a housing choice voucher—a lifeline that could finally help me find stability. After months of searching and working with kind people, I’ve been approved for an apartment. The only thing standing in my way is the security deposit, which I need to pay within seven days to secure my new home. Without it, I risk losing both the apartment and my voucher, and I don’t want to lose this chance for a fresh start.
This isn’t just about having a roof over my head. Right now, I’m staying in someone else’s house, and it’s a difficult situation where I’m being taken advantage of because I have nowhere else to go. Having my own place would be truly life-changing. It would give me the stability I need to reconnect with my healthcare team, keep my appointments, and begin to heal from the depression and anxiety that come from not having a home. Most importantly, it would mean a safe, loving space for me and my emotional support companion, Courage. He’s more than a dog—he’s my friend and confidant, and we both long for a place to call our own.
I have always tried to help others whenever I could. In September 2019, I was used as an instrument of God to help save the life of a young woman who experienced cardiac arrest. I performed CPR and breathed for her until help arrived, but I know it was God who truly gave her the breath of life. My story was even featured on Fox17 in Grand Rapids. I share this not for praise, but to show that I believe in giving back and being there for others in their time of need.
