On Saturday, my family and I experienced a tragedy that has left us traumatized and displaced. While we were inside our apartment, my landlord’s son murdered her and his sister, then set off an explosion. We barely escaped the burning building with our lives, but the police rendered no aid and instead pointed guns at us. Due to excessive force, the police have been trying to cover up the fact that they failed to evacuate my family. We were inside the home when they shot more than 50 rounds into it, and the house exploded. We weren’t allowed out until the home was engulfed in smoke. We were forced out of the ambulance with my baby so they could attend to the suspect, and since then, we have received no support, answers, or help from authorities. My five children, my partner, and I now have nothing but the clothes on our backs, and the trauma has deeply affected us all.

My kids are struggling to sleep, crying when they see police or hear loud sounds, and asking me to sit with them in the bathroom for comfort. I am physically sick from the stress and unable to breastfeed my baby properly because I keep reliving the horror of smoke, blood, and violence. We have been left without a safe place to live, and NYC has failed us multiple times when it comes to protecting civilians and providing housing. We are desperate for a safe space, basic necessities, and mental health support to help us recover from this nightmare.
