We are raising funds for a humble, hardworking couple in Ukraine—Sergiy (62) and Larisa (55) —whose lives have been deeply affected by the ongoing war.

Sergiy bravely served on the front lines until he was decommissioned after suffering a concussion and turning 60. After 2 months in a military hospital, he returned home and worked any job he could find. Tragically, after having served on the front lines, he cannot walk or stand for long periods. In addition, he suffered a small stroke last year. But with the country’s limited resources redirected to active-duty soldiers, decommissioned veterans like Sergiy are often left behind. Access to medical care now requires cash, which they simply don’t have.

Larisa has worked for the railroad since she was 16. Even during the war’s most difficult early days—when public transportation was almost nonexistent—she would walk up to two hours each way to get to work. Her department now works full time for just 40% of their pay. In her spare time, Larisa selflessly volunteers to make camouflage nets, knit socks, and cook pierogi for soldiers on the front lines. She also sells vegetables and flowers when in season —anything they can grow—to help make ends meet.

Despite all their efforts, they are struggling. Sergiy has now lost his 3rd job since returning from service. He can’t keep a job until he receives proper medical treatment, and he can’t afford treatment without help.

We support them as much as we can—covering utilities and small medical expenses—but their needs now far exceed what we can manage alone. They both urgently need medical care, and they still live without basic necessities like indoor plumbing or running water.

If you’re able, any amount you can give will go directly to helping Sergiy and Larisa get the care they need and improve their living conditions. If we raise more than their medical bills require, the rest will go toward making their home more livable.
