In response to the call for global solidarity from organizers in the Philippines to ensure free and fair elections, the International Coalition for Human Rights in the Philippines (ICHRP) has launched an International Observer Mission to the Philippines during their election season. Portland-based solidarity allies from multiple organizations are taking part in this observer mission, traveling to the Philippines to witness and document the conditions on the ground, press for free and fair elections, and bring international attention to the dire human rights situation in the Philippines.
ICHRP-Global's InvestigatePH campaign in 2021 clearly showed the depth of government corruption and the repression of any person or organization advocating for genuine democracy. Historically during election season, politically charged violence and human rights abuses enacted by the Philippine government drastically increase. The conditions are proving to follow that trend this season as well. With elections looming in May 9, there has already been election fraud and vote-buying documented since voting began on April 10th.
Portland’s IOM contingent is comprised of 12 individuals. Many of us are taking time off from work to participate in this project. As the expense is great for travel and daily needs during the trip, we are really needing to lean on the financial support of those in our community who also understand the importance of international solidarity. Here’s what your donation will be going toward:

We also know that our trip does not end when we leave the Philippines but continues here in the US as we share back what we saw and learned. If you would like to learn more please reach out to any of the organizations represented and we can coordinate a reportback and/or invite you to future events. Thank you for supporting solidarity work and for standing up for human rights and fair elections in the Philippines!
