I need your help for my Eagle Scout project!
I will be restoring and bringing back to life the dive site, The Circle of Heroes, 10 miles off the shore from Honeymoon Island State Park in the Gulf of Mexico. This site honors every branch of the U.S. military service. Many veterans go on dives to see these statues. This unique site consists of 13 six-foot-tall statues placed 40 feet underwater, and in the center stands a four-foot-high, six-ton pentagon-shaped monument. I will be going down there with a group of scouts and civilians with cleaning tools to restore the dive site, cleaning off algae and built-up debris from the statues through the years of it being underwater and hurricane damage. This means a lot to our troop based out of MacDill Air Force Base, with every scout being a member of a military family. Funds will cover the cost of boat and scuba diving equipment we need to reach the site. Be a part of this meaningful mission to honor military service!
This project will be helpful to the community by providing leadership, manpower, resources, and community awareness to a difficult challenge. This site is not comparable to a public park where they are maintained by city funds and volunteers of all abilities. It is difficult to reach because it is 10 miles offshore, requires a boat, specialized equipment, and is under 40 feet of water.
I will be making sure everyone on board is up to date on certification and recognized by a scuba agency.
- Buddy system will be used throughout the dive, including checking others' gear.
- BSA depth limits observed; we will not go deeper than 40 feet. BSA swim test certification will be required.
- Personal health medical review 680-001 required for all scouts.
- Three certified and current lifeguards will participate in the dive.
- Boat captain, vessel, scuba equipment, air tanks, flotation devices, rescue O2, all will be certified/inspected.
- Average visibility at the project dive site is 31-35 feet.
- The project will occur in daylight on the sandy ocean floor at 40 feet with no deeper water present.
- Scuba flag float on the surface of the water and boat captain will provide supervision over surface safety conditions.
- A float plan detailing the departure, bottom time, surface time, and return time.
- Dive will not occur if the ocean current exceeds one knot.
- Dive will be conducted under a certified dive master.
My project advisor, and Troop Scoutmaster, Mr. Michael Harris,
will withdrawal the funds into his bank account on my behalf, however, I am overall responsible for the management of the funds (purchasing, distributing items, etc).
