Friends, We Need Your Voice—and Your Support!

My name is Shaun Spencer, the owner of My HUB Print Center inside the Nia Center, an economic opportunity campus in Louisville’s historic West End. Today, I’m reaching out not just as a tenant, but as an advocate for the future of West Louisville.

On May 29, 2025, tenants were blindsided with lease termination notices. TARC—the city’s only mass transit authority—had quietly approved the sale of the Nia Center in less than 24 hours, moving forward with a deal to convert it into yet another housing project. This decision came despite earlier assurances that no sale was planned—and despite our repeated expressions of interest to purchase the building if it ever came to market.

Here’s the truth:

Our Mayor's actions have shown he is against community-driven progress; and supports the removal of west Louisville community space!

What we need just as urgently is a business and community hub—a place for small-, minority-, and women-owned businesses to grow, for neighbors to connect, and for people to access services, jobs, and opportunity right along our city’s transit lines.

The West Louisville Dream Team(WLDT), Nia Center tenants, and our fiscal sponsor, The Center for Neighborhoods, have already submitted two formal proposals to purchase the building (the most recent on June 30, 2025). For weeks, our offers were ignored as TARC showed the building to outside buyers. Only after the community spoke out did TARC agree to negotiate with us—but even now, they are attaching stipulations that threaten the true spirit of community ownership.

The Nia Center is not just bricks and mortar. It is a symbol—a reminder of Metro Louisville’s promise to correct decades of systemic disinvestment, the extraction of West Louisville’s resources, and the racism that sparked the 1968 Parkland uprising, where two teens lost their lives and more than 450 residents were arrested.

We are not opposed to development. We are opposed to exclusion. All we are asking is to be included, to be given a fair chance to purchase this building, expand its impact, and preserve it as a cornerstone for opportunity in West Louisville.
