My nonnie Annette Dunn bought this house in 1965 with my grandfather. My dad and aunt were raised in it, and so were me and my sister. After my parents divorced when we were young, we moved around a lot—about 15 times growing up. This house is the only place that has always been there for us. I haven’t had it easy and have had to couch surf at times, but my grandma’s house was always a safe haven. I was the last one in the family to live there, and it means everything to me.
She died somewhat unexpectedly last year on 5/5. Her will left the house to my dad and his sister, split 50/50. My aunt initially said she would move in, but instead used that as a way to gut the house and, at the last minute, decided she wants to sell it. We are devastated. The foundation is cracking, and the house sits on the corner of a big hill—it needs major repairs to keep it safe. My dad is so stressed dealing with my aunt’s schemes that he just wants to sell the house and be done with it. As a Black family, home ownership is so important to us. I don’t see a future where I can buy a house like this again, and I want to keep it in the family so badly. I want my kids to live in this house someday.
Funds raised will go toward buying out my aunt’s share and repairing the foundation so the house doesn’t fall down the hill. The one-year anniversary of my grandmother’s passing is coming up on 5/5/2026, and the house is under contract to be sold. Please, help us buy out our aunt and save my grandmother’s house from being lost to familial greed.
