Help My Mom Keep Her Home After an Unthinkable Betrayal
My mother has always been my rock.
When my father died when I was 17, she somehow found the strength to keep going. Years later, she remarried and built a quiet, loving life in Rhode Island with my stepfather. They shared a home in East Providence and a small summer house on Prudence Island—a place that became their retirement dream.
Prudence Island is only accessible by ferry. When the weather is bad, you simply can’t get on or off. This detail matters more than we ever imagined.
In late 2023, my stepfather became critically ill and underwent emergency surgery that left him needing a colostomy and round-the-clock care. He spent six weeks in rehab. During that time, my mother slept on relatives’ couches just to stay near him. Doctors told us he needed full-time care, and around the same time my mother was diagnosed with macular degeneration, making it unsafe for her to live alone on the island.
So my husband and I did what families do—we stepped in. We found a nursing facility near our home so my mom could stay with us and still be close to her husband.
That’s when everything fell apart.
While my stepfather was sick, vulnerable, and declining, his adult daughter—who had not been involved in his care—intervened. She removed him from the nursing facility against medical advice, changed his power of attorney, isolated him from my mother, and moved him four hours away. My mother was not allowed to see or speak to her husband for the final six months of his life.
During that time, my stepfather was pressured into changing legal documents, cutting my mother out of shared finances, and initiating a divorce she never wanted. She loved him. She would have cared for him until the end.
She didn’t even learn of his death from family. She had a feeling something was wrong, called the hospital herself, and was told he had passed away three days earlier.
Since January 2025, my mother has been fighting this in probate court simply to protect what she already owned—half of the marital home on Prudence Island. The legal battle has drained her savings. She is almost 77 years old, on a fixed income, and terrified.
Now, we’ve received notice that the Prudence Island home—the primary asset tying up the estate—is in foreclosure.
This is the breaking point.
My mother is losing sleep over how she will survive, how she will cover legal costs, and how she will “pay us back” for helping her. I don’t care about being paid back. I care about protecting her from losing everything after already losing so much.
We have an excellent legal team, but justice is expensive—and delay only benefits the person stonewalling the process.
We never imagined asking for help like this. But if you can donate, share, or even just read her story, you are helping a woman who spent her life caring for others avoid losing her home and her dignity.
If you’ve ever loved your mom… if you can imagine her in this situation… or if you want to follow what has honestly become a real-life telenovela—we are deeply grateful for any support.
Thank you for reading. Thank you for caring. And thank you for helping my mother stand back up when life knocked her down.
