I want to tell you about Kathleen McClellan. She is 75 years old and served 8 years in the United States Army. Right now, she is at risk of losing the only home her family has ever owned. Kathleen lives in a traditional Craftsman-style home in Wakefield, Kansas. Her Great-Grandfather bought that house new in 1927, and it has been in her family ever since—nearly 100 years, four generations, countless memories, and more love than most houses ever see. Today, that house needs us.
The back porch—a 1940s addition—has extensive structural dry rot throughout its framing, floor joists, sill plate, and roof rafters. Nearly half the floor sits completely open over an unsealed crawlspace. Local authorities have been pressuring Kathleen to address the structure, threatening to condemn the property and force her to demolish not just the porch, but potentially the entire house. This would leave her, a 75-year-old Army veteran living on a fixed income, with the full bill. I cannot let this happen, and I am asking you to stand with me.
I am a licensed Class A General Contractor and have personally assessed this property. I’ve created a code-compliant plan to fully restore this nearly century-old home over four stages: Stage 1a ($50,489.55) for emergency back porch rebuild, Stage 1b ($22,000) for main house roof replacement, Stage 2 ($44,500) for interior restoration, Stage 3 ($67,500) for mechanical systems upgrades, and Stage 4 ($56,874.31) for solar panel installation. The total project cost is $241,363.86. Every donation, material contribution, or volunteer effort makes a difference. Please stand with me to save Kathleen’s home and preserve her family’s story for generations to come. Thank you for your support.
