Help Save Endangered Bats! (Eagle Scout Project)
Donation protected
My name is Michael Milillo. I am a Boy Scout and Senior Patrol Leader of Troop 21 in Suffern NY, and I am currently fundraising for my Eagle Scout Project. My current rank in scouting is Life Scout, and my Eagle Scout Project is the necessary next-step on the journey for me to become an Eagle Scout!
For my Eagle Scout Project, I am constructing and mounting eight bat houses atop four posts across the Village of Montebello NY, the beneficiary of the project. Bat houses are important in supporting the ecosystem by offering shelter for bats to roost while in hibernation, and giving a place for female bats to raise their young. Bats serve the environment by pollinating plants and eating mosquitos that could carry disease. This allows for better mosquito control without the use of as much pesticide that could be hazardous to people, pets, and other wildlife. Local bat populations are declining due to White Nose Syndrome, caused by a fungus that can be spread between bats. Bat houses offer a shelter for healthy bats away from other bats that may carry the fungus, thus regrowing the population. The blueprints to the bat houses we will construct can be found here
Donations will be used to purchase building and mounting materials for the bat houses as well as other incidental costs. The labor will be supplied by scouts and scouting leaders as well as family and friends. The project has been approved by the Village of Montebello, and the Boy Scout Rockland District Board.
By donating, you will help maintain our ecosystem by funding the construction of bat houses. Please donate today!
