FULL STORY BELOW. Cost breakdown in pics.
Brax, one of our four rescue dogs who we’ve had since 2019, has been fighting for his life.
He had a potentially cancerous, baseball-sized mass on his spleen. If not removed, it could rupture at any moment, causing life-threatening internal bleeding & giving him only about 3 months to live.
On February 5th, he underwent surgery to remove his spleen and the mass.
The procedure went well, and he stayed at a 24-hour vet for post-op monitoring before coming home.
But within days, we knew something was very wrong.
Despite two ER vet visits, where we were told he just needed fluids and time, Brax wasn’t improving. He was regurgitating fluids, refusing to eat, and growing more lethargic.
At 1 AM on February 10th, we rushed him to a specialty vet hospital we had just learned about. The surgeon suspected either a surgical error—like a foreign object left inside—or a rare reaction to NSAIDs. To be sure, they reopened his abdomen.
What they found was far worse.
Brax was septic, with a severe infection in his abdomen. The surgeon flushed out the infection and placed a drain to help clear it. On top of that, he developed aspiration pneumonia, making breathing even harder.
Since that second surgery, Brax has been hospitalized, fighting for his life. He’s on IV fluids, antibiotics, oxygen support, a feeding tube, and undergoing constant monitoring—x-rays, bloodwork, heart rate, blood pressure checks, etc.
And now, today (Feb 17), another culture revealed a life-threatening staph infection. The antibiotics treating his pneumonia weren’t working against it, so they’re switching his antibiotic again.
This has been a horrible, exhausting journey. Brax is battling every single day, and all we want is for him to pull through.
If you know Greg and I, you know how deeply we love animals—often treating them as if they were our own kids (we may care a little too much, I'm sure our friends and family would say;) ). Greg never asks for anything when it comes to saving an animal, whether it’s a bird with a hook in its wing, a dying squirrel, or one of our own pets. He just helps—out of the kindness of his heart.
I’d love to surprise him by raising a little money to help with this overwhelming medical journey.
After losing almost everything in our home due to Hurricane Helene flooding, we’re in the process of lifting & rebuilding our house right now, which adds to the complications of this medical journey.
While we don’t expect anything (helping animals is always our choice), any amount—$10, anything—would mean the world to us.
Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts.
(For transparency, all medical bills are included in this fundraiser’s photos. The Epic Specialty bill alone is 12 pages long, so I’ve attached just the last page for now.)
GRAND TOTAL AS OF 2/17/25: $68,928.09 (& counting, unfortunately)
Prayers, good vibes & positive manifestations are so appreciated as well.
