Months into the war, Gamila began experiencing unexplained weakness in her legs. At first, she thought it was just fatigue, but soon walking became a struggle. The simplest daily tasks became unbearable challenges. In Gaza, where the health system had collapsed, there was no way to know what was happening. There were no biopsies, no adequate tests, just X-rays that showed nothing. As the war raged around them, Jamila’s illness worsened. There was no hope in Gaza, but in April, five months after she first felt the problem, Gamila was able to leave Gaza with the help of Aboud and his friends. But the truth they discovered in Egypt was devastating: stage four breast cancer. The disease had spread rapidly, affecting her spine, leaving her unable to move or eat, and her weight had dropped to 25 kilograms. The doctors were clear in their prognosis: her case was hopeless.

But her husband Aboud did not give up.

He searched hard, seeking any opportunity, any glimmer of hope. Here he met a doctor in Egypt who told him that Gamila could be cured with the right treatment. The cost of the treatment was expensive, reaching more than $1,200 a month, but with the help of friends and family, they were able to raise enough money to start treatment.

In just three months, Gamila began to improve amazingly. She regained her strength, her ability to eat, and her ability to move. Her body responded unexpectedly to the treatment, as her condition improved by 95%. With this great improvement, they were able to secure treatment for another two months.

However, as for the future, the doctor told them that the treatment would have to continue for a whole year to ensure a complete recovery, which would represent a huge financial burden.

Las tareas cotidianas más sencillas se convirtieron en desafíos insoportables. En Gaza, donde el sistema de salud estaba colapsado, no había forma de saber qué estaba pasando. No hubo biopsias, ni pruebas adecuadas, sólo una radiografía que no mostró nada. Mientras la guerra se desataba a su alrededor, la enfermedad de Gamila empeoró.

No había esperanza en Gaza, pero en abril, cinco meses después de sentir el problema por primera vez, Gamila pudo salir de Gaza con la ayuda de Aboud y sus amigos. Pero la verdad que descubrieron en Egipto fue devastadora: cáncer de mama en etapa 4. La enfermedad se había propagado rápidamente, afectando su columna vertebral, dejándola incapaz de moverse o comer, y su peso había bajado a 25 kilogramos. Los médicos fueron claros en su diagnóstico: su condición era desesperada.

Pero su marido Aboud no se dio por vencido.
