Help Sarah Volunteer in New Delhi, India

Donation protected
Hey everyone!

My name is Sarah. I am currently in my second year at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, where I am studying Global Development. I am extremely fortunate to have been hired by Queen's Project on International Development (QPID) for their internship position in New Delhi, India. QPID is a student-run organization operating out of Queen's University since 1990. QPID strives to foster an awareness of global development, environmental and social issues that our generation faces to inspire global change.

This summer I will be working with VIDYA, an organization that was founded in 1985, which specializes in the education and empowerment of less-privileged children, youth, and women. VIDYA focuses on working with individuals to create change. Their areas of expertise include schooling, remedial education, computer training, adult literacy, skills training, microfinance, and social entrepreneurship in India.

What Will I Be Doing?

My role in New Delhi will predominantly be to learn and grow - personally, critically, and academically - while also experiencing first hand the intricate workings of a national NGO. Not only will I have the opportunity to work in a school--which provides high quality education to over 1000 impoverished children every year--but I will also have the chance to work in the local community with the goal of empowering women and youth. VIDYA emphasizes empowerment through education and prioritizes free tuition for families living on very low incomes. They also partner with community centres to provide educational workshops to empower women.

Why am I going?

Most importantly, this is an invaluable learning opportunity.  I am committed to defining and exploring modern notions of sustainable development. In preparation for my internship, I have been working towards a greater understanding of my role within development and how practical and realistic my intentions and goals are. This internship is meant to open my eyes to the challenges, deficits, successes, and consequences of international development.

With this opportunity comes a lot of responsibility. I am accountable as a global citizen to consider my intentions carefully. The most important thing about this internship is not to leave the community worse off because of our involvement.

Personally, I hope to expand my understanding of the culture in India, and to challenge my understanding of development. I hope to build lasting and sustainable partnerships and relationships, and to offer help where needed and desired.

Why $5000?

Each intern is required to fundraise $3,000 as an investment to QPID. This is a small contribution in relation to the total cost of the internship, but ensures the future existence of the organization and for the opportunity of future internships. Once fundraised, QPID covers all other expenses such as transportation and accommodations.

The other $2,000 is an investment into my future. Because this is an unpaid internship, I am forgoing paid employment in my hometown. This means that I will have a very large financial burden for the rest of my time in university. However, this internship is an opportunity of a lifetime that I cannot pass up. Family and friends, I’m looking to you to help me achieve goals in my field. Feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions!
