A house with a purpose…
Last year, my father was informed by his doctor that the prostate cancer had returned. It was a frustrating time for the whole family. I knew that I had to do *something* to help him and my mom.
HOUSING was the first thing that came to my mind. They are in a third floor apartment with no elevator and have not been successful since moving to the area in finding a better, permanent place. I figured that as he moves forward with chemo, etc, three flights of stairs would be an issue. So, we started looking around with them for a place, only to become more acquainted with the term, “housing crisis.”
And then one day, my mother-in-law called us and told us about this little blue house! She was helping us look for a place for my parents one afternoon when she pulled over to the side of the road to pray. She had become frustrated at the lack of viable options out there for affordable housing options. She prayed and asked God to guide her to the *right* place. When she opened her eyes, she was looking right at this little blue house!
Unlived in for a few years, and in need of major repairs. Major repairs!
The little blue house was far from unknown to her. It was actually built by her grandfather, a local blacksmith many years ago. Her father, my wife’s grandpa, was born in this little house. It is rich in family history, to say the least! Her family would later sell the property, and the rest is history.
The moment I saw this house, I said, “We can do this!” Now, you should know that I am NOT an impulsive decision maker. My wife said she was really shocked that I was so ready so fast.
We got busy. Contacted the owner, who was surprisingly very ready to sell. Contacted the bank, took out some money to start remodeling and put all my construction skills from a past life back to work! We charged forward full speed ahead with our mission to get the little blue house back in a livable condition for my parents!
The more we tore into the project, the deeper we had to keep tearing into it.
Here’s where we have hit a snag… Like a cliche scene from a home remodel show, we’ve run out of money and the house is far from done. We’re trying not to lose our minds, and we really feel like this project is something God has led us to, but we need help.
I’ve learned that God often uses regular people to do amazing things.
If you are able, please consider giving us some support to help us finish the little blue house and get my parents into a permanent place.
