We need your support to raise $1,950 to help trap and remove a family of coyotes that has made a den in a neighbor's crawl space in Leimert Park. Despite reaching out to several government agencies, it has become clear that our best course of action is to hire a private trapper to safely catch and relocate the coyote family.
Here's the background info I learned: Animal control cannot assist because coyotes are wild animals and they only handle domestic animals. I learned that coyote sightings should be reported to the LA County Department of Agriculture. I reported the sighting, but was informed that they lack jurisdiction in the City of Los Angeles and can only trap and remove animals in unincorporated areas like West Hollywood, Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, and Culver City.
The Department of Agriculture suggested three options:
1) Call the local fire department to clear vacant yards, making them less hospitable to coyotes.
2) Contact the Department of Zoning, though they typically handle removing broken-down cars.
3) Hire a private trapper, which seems to be our best option.
The cost of hiring a professional trapper is beyond what one family can afford, and this situation affects our entire neighborhood. Here’s the breakdown of the costs:
$450 to set the trap (with access for a month)
$250 per animal removed (we need to remove 6 coyotes: two parents and four pups)
In total, we need $1,950 to remove the entire family.
Your contribution, no matter the amount, will help us keep our community safe and provide the coyotes with a better home. Please donate what you can and share this fundraiser with others. Together, we can make a difference!
Thank you for your generosity and support!
