Help Bring Our Mother Home – We’re Lost Without Her

Hello, my name is isidro santillano, and I’m one of the oldest sons of Señora Rosa. I’m currently serving in the U.S. military, and I never imagined I’d be writing something like this — especially about the strongest woman I know.

A few days ago, our mother was detained by ICE, and our entire world has been turned upside down. It’s hard to even put into words how much pain our family is in right now. My siblings and I feel helpless, and being far away while in service, I can’t even be there to support them in person. What hurts even more is that my younger brother is also in the military, and like me, he also can’t be home during this time. That alone is tearing us apart.

My mom has lived in the United States for over 20 years, after coming here from Mexico with nothing but hope and the dream of giving her children a better life. She’s the kind of mother who always went without so we never had to. She raised five kids on her own and made sure we all stayed in school, stayed out of trouble, and believed we could become something more. Now, she has five grandkids who adore her — and don’t understand why their grandma isn’t home.

She doesn’t deserve to be sitting in a detention center. She deserves to be surrounded by the family she sacrificed her entire life for.

We’re trying to raise $10,000 to pay for the immigration lawyer who can help her fight her case and complete the Parole in Place process — a step that could lead to her release. Without this, we don’t know how long she’ll be kept from us… or what might happen next.

Our family simply can’t afford this on our own. We’ve always tried to make it work with what we had, but this is beyond what we’re able to handle. Hola, mi nombre es Isidro santillano, y soy uno de los hijos mayores de Señora Rosa. Actualmente estoy sirviendo en el ejército de los Estados Unidos, y jamás imaginé tener que escribir algo así — mucho menos sobre la mujer más fuerte que conozco.

Hace unos días, nuestra madre fue detenida por ICE, y desde entonces nuestro mundo se ha venido abajo. Es difícil poner en palabras el dolor que sentimos en este momento. Mis hermanos y yo nos sentimos impotentes, y al estar lejos por el servicio, ni siquiera puedo estar allí para apoyarlos. Lo que lo hace aún más difícil es que mi hermano menor también está en el ejército, y al igual que yo, tampoco puede estar en casa en este momento. Eso nos está destrozando.

Mi mamá ha vivido en los Estados Unidos por más de 20 años, después de venir de México con nada más que esperanza y el sueño de darnos una vida mejor. Es el tipo de madre que siempre se sacrificó para que a nosotros no nos faltara nada. Crió a cinco hijos sola, asegurándose de que todos fuéramos a la escuela, nos alejáramos de los problemas y creyéramos en un futuro mejor. Ahora tiene cinco nietos que la adoran — y que no entienden por qué su abuelita no está en casa.

Ella no merece estar en un centro de detención. Ella merece estar rodeada de la familia por la que dio todo.

Estamos tratando de recaudar $10,000 dólares para cubrir los honorarios del abogado de inmigración que puede ayudarla a luchar su caso y completar el proceso de Parole in Place, que podría permitir su liberación. Sin esto, no sabemos cuánto tiempo estará lejos de nosotros… o qué podría pasar.
