A few days ago, a 13-year-old Gold Coast girl was seriously assaulted near Aldi in Robina.

The incident occurred on Friday, 14 August, and resulted in her being taken by ambulance to Gold Coast University Hospital after she was kicked, stomped and knocked unconscious during the assault.

Her story was subsequently shared through StreetBuzz and Gold Coast Crime: The Gold Coast Torch and the community response was massive. More than 1,000 people reacted, hundreds commented and the story was shared hundreds of times.

I've since been in contact with both the mum and people close to the family, and learned that her phone was also smashed during the incident, leaving her without one. This was what originally sparked the idea for the fundraiser. After speaking with the family, she will most likely need future surgeries on her nose, and they are also organising counselling and martial arts/self defence classes moving forward.

*Note from mum "Unfortunately, the specialists at GCUH told us yesterday that they need her face to develop more, because she is still so young before they can do certain surgeries. But after yesterday’s appointment, they have booked her in next week to drain a remaining hematoma behind her septum, as it's preventing her from being able to breathe, sleep, and eat comfortably."

After everything this young girl and her family have already been through, I thought we could turn some of the attention surrounding this story into something positive. We're hoping to raise $1,000 to help replace her phone and take one problem off the family's plate. If even a small number of the people who followed, commented on or shared her story contribute a few dollars, we can get there.
