Help Reunite Jovie with Her Detained Mother

On Monday, May 4th at 6:45 in the morning, I received a message from my aunt saying: “Nena, we were on our way to work in the company van when State Troopers stopped us. Whatever happens, please let Jovie know and go get her.”

A few moments later, another message came through saying: “They are arresting us.”

After that, we lost all communication with my aunt.

I, Banely, live four hours away from where my aunt and cousin were. My husband Alan and I immediately got in the car and prayed the entire drive that we would arrive in time to get my 17-year-old cousin Jovie before immigration authorities did.

By the grace of God, we made it in time. We were able to pick up Jovie, gather the little clothing and belongings we could for her, and bring her safely home with us.

For hours, we had no idea what had happened to my aunt. We spent the entire day searching the ICE locator system, desperately hoping her information would finally appear. That same night, around 11 PM, we finally found her name and learned that in less than 24 hours she had already been transferred to a detention center in Louisiana — a state completely unfamiliar to our family, as we live in Florida.

During all of this, Jovie was devastated. She was scared, heartbroken, and desperate to know what had happened to her mom — the only safe place she had ever known. A 17-year-old girl suddenly separated from her mother without warning.

My aunt was finally able to contact us Tuesday morning to explain where she was and what had happened. She is currently being held in a detention center in Louisiana where she is charged even for phone calls and food, and where she is being treated like a criminal despite simply being a hardworking woman who had lived in this country for 26 years.

As we navigate this heartbreaking and unexpected situation, Alan and I have stepped in to care for Jovie while also trying to manage guardianship paperwork, emergency relocation expenses, moving belongings out of my aunt’s apartment, shipping items back to Guatemala, legal expenses, and many unexpected financial responsibilities that came overnight.

We are humbly asking for support from anyone who feels moved to help our family during this difficult time. Every donation, prayer, share, and act of kindness means more than words can express to Jovie, my aunt, and our entire Chilin family.

Gracias a Dios logramos llegar a tiempo.
