We weathered the storm here at five corners in Haʻikū, Maui, but barely.
In one night, everything changed.
A tree came down and tore through our roof. You can see exactly where the branch punched through: splintered wood, open sky, and rain pouring straight into our home. Since then, everything has been wet, muddy, and breaking down. Parts of the ceiling have already fallen in on us while we were sleeping.
This isn’t just damage, it’s danger.
The roof now has multiple holes and requires replacement of at least 3–4 structural plywood panels. Water intrusion has spread quickly, and mold is already starting to form.
We are a local family doing our best to hold it together.
We are a Choctaw and Native Hawaiian family, raising our kids Ilihia, Abbha and Haalilio "Lio" with love, resilience, and deep connection to place. This home is more than shelter, it’s where our kids feel safe, where we build our lives, and where we feel protected. This is the place where Lio was born seven years ago. Like so many, we need help with few options.
Now we’re facing urgent repairs we cannot absorb alone.
The immediate needs include:
• Roof repair and structural plywood replacement
• Water damage mitigation
• Mold remediation
• Interior ceiling and wall restoration
• Basic stabilization to make the home safe again
We estimate $20,000 to cover the critical repairs needed to make our home livable and safe.
We are not asking lightly.
We are asking because time matters. Every day that passes allows more water intrusion, more mold progression, and more damage. Acting quickly is the difference between repair and complete loss.
If you are able to help, whether through a donation or simply sharing this, please know it means everything to us.
From the bottom of our hearts, mahalo nui loa for standing with our family during this moment.
Aloha,
Krissta Caldwell
