L.F. has been a part of our neighborhood since the 1990s, when she and her husband moved here from Chicago and bought the very first lot. Over the years, she has quietly built a life here with her family, but recent hardships have left her in a difficult situation. After losing her husband to cancer a few years ago, L.F. suffered a stroke that left her in a wheelchair. Her adult son, who is disabled, visits often to care for her, as she cannot be alone. With no other family nearby, they have faced these challenges together, always with kindness and humility.

Recently, it became clear that their home was in urgent need of repairs. The central heating and air units have been broken for two years, there is no hot water to the kitchen sink, and vines have grown up the sides of the house. Tree limbs rest on the roof of the garage, the gutters are broken, and two of the front columns have rotted wood. The ductwork in the attic has holes, and two windows at the back of the house are partially open, with rags and rugs stuffed in to keep out the elements. The fence also needs repairs, and the city has issued violations. While some generous volunteers have offered their labor, the scope of work is simply too great for us to handle alone.

L.F. and her son have never asked for help—in fact, they are embarrassed by their situation and have only ever apologized for the state of their home. But as neighbors, we believe it’s time to come together and show them they are not alone. By raising funds for these urgent repairs, we hope to restore their home, relieve their feelings of hopelessness, and lift their spirits.
