The Lennox Area Museum building is owned by the City of Lennox, but the stuff inside it—the exhibits, treasures, and memories—are cared for by the Lennox Area Historical Society. The LAHS is a small group of area elders who are willing to accept the responsibility of accepting donations, keeping records of them, keeping the spaces and exhibits clean, researching people and things of this part of the world, and welcoming visitors to the Museum.
One treasure in our collection is the old "Smitty's Popcorn Wagon," which was a Saturday night fixture on Main Street Lennox for decades. It was in pretty rough shape when we got it. After many months of indecision, we started the renovation process, hoping to make it usable once again. We don't expect to make much money from selling popcorn; we expect to make people smile, tell stories, and share the nostalgia of their childhood in Lennox.
Have you ever restored an old vehicle? The costs are unpredictable and generally greater than you planned on. Decent tires were acquired, Denning Companies has completed the bodywork, and the shop class at LHS has completed the window framing woodwork. The stainless steel counter, popper, and fuel hookup are still to come. The biggest cost was the bodywork, of course, and we are asking you to help us satisfy that bill.
Do you have fond memories of buying popcorn at the wagon on Main Street when you were a kid? Do your parents or grandparents have those memories? It's fun to hear a group discussion on the cost of a bag of popcorn in the old days and to listen to the conversations about who was selling it!
Please help the LAHS pay for this restored community landmark!
