Capitol Theatre has been a cornerstone of Mount Gilead and Morrow County, Ohio for over a century. Established in 1921, our single screen movie house has brought the latest films and live entertainment to families at prices everyone can afford. The theatre sits in two attached buildings, with the oldest part dating back more than 130 years. We bought this theatre to keep entertainment local and accessible, just as we remember enjoying it as kids. Our mission is to preserve its history and ensure it remains a gathering place for generations to come.
Over the years, we’ve completed many projects to maintain the theatre’s unique charm and historical significance. Capitol Theatre was one of the first buildings in the area to have air conditioning and served as a community hub, even hosting the county’s first long-distance radio transmission from Pittsburgh. We focus on creating memorable experiences for our guests—whether it’s a movie night or a live event—without breaking the bank.
On Friday, March 13, 2026, our theatre was hit hard by high winds, causing extensive damage. A chimney was knocked down, the original slate roof was damaged, and the roofing over the theater space was torn off. While we’re still assessing the full extent of the damage, we know repairs will be costly. This comes on the heels of a year filled with unexpected emergency expenses, including a major projector replacement. The financial strain is significant, and we find ourselves needing to ask for help to keep Capitol Theatre’s doors open.
The funds raised will help us cover our insurance deductible and any repairs not covered by insurance. Your support will ensure that Capitol Theatre can continue to serve as a beloved gathering place for our community. We would be so grateful if you could help by sharing our story, visiting us at the theatre, buying advertising or merchandise, or making a donation—every bit helps, whether you’re near or far. Thank you for helping us preserve this special place for future generations.
