Attempts are being made to remove us as guardians of our 39-year-old severely disabled twin sons. We have been primary care for Joseph and Jon since they were born. Because they are adults with severe intellectual, social, emotional disabilities (they function as toddlers) we have been , first, conservators in California and, now, guardians since moving to Missouri three years ago.
In December, 2023 we made the difficult decision to have Joseph and Jon move into their own home under the state's Independent Supported Living program. This is not a group home, this is a house rented in a nice area of town for the two of them to live together as roommates. The state provides 24/7 care and nursing oversite. We have retained our guardianship to allow us to monitor their care and make all decisions medically as well as decisions pertaining to their lives in general. Choosing this route, as difficult as it has been, relieves us of daily physical care due to our health and age.
In the past three months multiple allegations of abuse to the state's anonymous adult abuse hot line. This has resulted in our guardianship being temporarily suspended until a hearing on July 10. Until these allegations are cleared, hopefully at that hearing, a temporary guardian (public administrator) has been appointed by the court.
We need an attorney. We have had a consultation with two attorneys. The one we have chosen will require $5000 to establish us as a client. This will be the total cost of the process if the hearing goes as expected.
We are currently looking at possible loans. That will, obviously, increase our debt. We will do whatever it takes to continue caring for our children. Even ask for help or get a loan.
We are setting our goal at $7000 to cover gofundme cost and any other incidental, unexpected costs to address these allegations and have guardianship of Joseph and Jon reinstated.
Thank you listening to the heart of this Mom and Dad.
We love you, Joseph.
We love you, Jon.
