Help restore #701, a 1910 Vulcan Narrow Gauge Steam Locomotive
We are officially beginning the restoration of a one-of-a-kind piece of American railroad history: A 1910 Vulcan 36" Gauge Steam Locomotive.
The Legacy of #701:
1910: Built by Vulcan Iron Works in Wilkes-Barre, PA.
The Early Years: Helped build trolley lines across the Lehigh Valley and Easton, PA for the M.P. Mcgrath Construction Co.
The Southern Era: Served the NC&StL Railroad and the Sam Werner Lumber Company in Tracy City, Tennessee.
2026: Returned to Pennsylvania soil for the first time in over a century by the Northeast Narrow Gauge Railroad Society, Inc.
Currently housed at the Loyalsock Valley Antique Machinery Association in Ralston, PA, this locomotive is a survivor. After spending 80 years in a shed, she is in remarkable condition, but "bringing her back to life" requires specialized parts, labor, and funding.
Your donation goes directly toward the beginning of mechanical restoration of this 115-year-old icon and recovery of transportation costs from Tennessee.
First phase of the 701 project includes:
Cleaning and evaluation, Mechanical documentation, Ultrasonic testing, Boiler inspection and rust removal and treatments.
Help us ensure that the steam whistles of the past can be heard by future generations.
Visit us in Ralston, PA to see this locomotive project and our other project, D&H Canal Company coach #3, the oldest narrow gauge coach in the USA! Check the Loyalsock Valley Antique Machinery Association for open days and events.
