Help Restore Race Rock's (Unsafe) Railing

September 22, 2025: Yes, yes, yes! -- today is the day we reached -- no surpassed -- our goal! Thank you all so very much for your generosity. Replacing the railing at Race Rock Light is the single most-important things we could do to increase safety at the lighthouse. And now it's done! And, guess what? We no sooner fixed the railing than it was site of a photo shoot, for an upcoming exhibition of Fishers Island images by Adrian Bloom. We're planning now for the next improvements at RR. Thank you. We'll keep you posted! NLMS & Susan Thanks to Andy Champagne for the terrific video!

August 11, 2025: Last week Stonington Steel began fabricating the new railing for Race Rock Lighthouse.
We need to raise $25,000 to install a new railing at Race Rock. We asked the US Coast Guard what they most needed repaired at the lighthouse. They said: the railing. Rusted and broken, the iron railing at the lighthouse is unsafe.

Stonington Steel is remaking the original design of the railing. In fact, it's being built onshore right now. A grant covers the design work and construction of the railing. It will be installed at Race Rock in August. Like the USCG, safety is our #1 concern.

Before that, we must raise an additional $25,000 to cover installation expenses out at the lighthouse. Please donate. Please help us Replace the Railing at Race Rock Light.

As a 501(c)(3) public charity, NLMS can accept fully tax-deductible contributions of cash or securities to support this effort. NLMS preserves four historic maritime landmarks: New London Harbor Light (est. 1761, current tower 1801), the NL Custom House (1833), Race Rock Lighthouse (1878), and NL Ledge Light (1909). We run the Custom House Maritime Museum -- telling the stories of the local waterfront. Local, friendly, authentic, we promote, interpret, and celebrate the rich maritime life & history of the port of New London and the surrounding region through museum exhibitions, educational programs, and preservation initiatives.
