Harmony in Hardship: Backing Renten & Simon on their journey.
My name is Stephanie Powell-Hellyer, a long-time friend of Karla Phillips, Simon Paul, and Renten. In light of the recent news that Renten (almost 18 years old) has once again been diagnosed with Burkitt lymphoma (cancer) we were hoping to start a “Go Fund Me” to help support Simon and Renten. Karla was one of my best friends growing up, always looking out for both me and my siblings in a time when it seemed no one else was. I owe her this at the very least.
Anyone who knows this family knows they have been tested time and time again. After battling congestive heart failure for a long time, Karla passed away in January of 2015. Renten at the time was only 9 years old. Having already undergone a heart transplant after his birth (2006), Renten was later diagnosed with Burkitt lymphoma in October 2016, not long after Karla’s death. As a single parent, Simon was faced with unbearable and significant challenges caring for his son while grieving the loss of his wonderful wife.
Simon Paul is a successful Art Director, Graphic Designer and Illustrator, having done work for many successful artists including the Tragically Hip and The Sam Roberts Band. Karla would also want me to mention that Simon was recognized with nominations for a CCMA and two JUNOs in recording package design. She was extremely proud of Simon’s accomplishments. Simon has since become an independent graphic designer allowing him to support Renten, with issues associated with his heart transplant, cancer diagnosis, the loss of his mother at such a young age and even navigating Covid-19 with such health vulnerabilities.
Renten’s second cancer diagnosis also comes with additional challenges, as Simon, Renten’s primary caregiver, is now in heart failure. The upcoming months will be filled with many health appointments and long stays at the hospital, and of course uncertainty. The financial burdens will be overwhelming as Simon focuses his time and energy on caring for Renten and attending to his own concerning health issues.
We know how much Renten and Simon need each other at this time. Karla would have done anything for any of her loved ones (and did!), so I am hoping we can help Simon by alleviating some of the financial burdens that are associated with loss of work and costs associated with healthcare such as taxi rides to Sick Kid’s Hospital and Toronto General Hospital, food, any other unexpected costs. In a few short weeks, Renten will be 18 years old and will most likely not be attending the many milestone celebrations that come with graduating from high school. One of my fondest memories of Karla is having her help me get ready for my prom – being the great fashionista she was. We all wish things were different and that Karla was here and would be helping Renten to get ready for his prom. I know there are many people who care and love this family. I hope we can do a little something to make a heartbreaking situation for both Renten and Simon. Any help would be appreciated.
