Fredrick E. “Coach” Gilmore was more than a coach—he was a mentor, leader, and pillar of the Sarasota community. Born and raised in Sarasota, and a proud graduate of Booker High School, Coach Fred dedicated his life to shaping the lives of countless young people both on and off the field.

Over 32 years at Booker High School, Fred served as Athletic Director, Head Coach, Assistant Coach, and Security Guard. To generations of students, families, and colleagues, he was simply “Coach Fred.”

A Legacy of Excellence

Football: Twice named Sarasota Herald-Tribune Coach of the Year, Florida Dairy Farmers 3A Coach of the Year, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers Coach of the Week, Coach Fred developed more than 100 collegiate football players, three NFL draft picks, and even a Pro Bowler/Super Bowl Champion.

But Coach Fred’s true calling was deeper than wins and trophies—his passion was investing in young people. Through Booker athletics, the Ringling Redskins Youth Football League, and Newtown Little League, he built confidence, character, and community. His dedication touched thousands of lives, many of whom carry his lessons into their families, careers, and communities today.
