My name is Rediet Mulatu, and I am raising funds for my 19-year-old sister, who is currently facing an unexpected and overwhelming immigration crisis.
My sister came to the United States as an international student for her junior and senior years of high school. She worked incredibly hard, graduated, and then joined the Year Up program, where she studied data analytics and successfully completed the program in just six months. After that, she earned an internship at Morgan Stanley in Baltimore, and due to her dedication and performance, she was retained after her internship ended. This opportunity has meant everything to her and to our family.
Throughout this entire journey, she has been living and working legally under Temporary Protected Status (TPS). Recently, we were devastated to learn that TPS has been terminated under the current administration. As a result, she has only 60 days to either secure a new immigration status or be forced to leave the country.
We have already spoken with an immigration lawyer, and the most viable option available to her is to apply for asylum. Unfortunately, the legal fees for this process are $7,000, which is far beyond what we can afford right now.
Because of the termination of TPS, my sister will also be forced to stop working in less than two months. This means we are not only struggling to cover the legal costs, but we are also facing difficulties paying for basic necessities such as rent, electricity, groceries, and transportation. On top of this, my sister is diabetic and requires ongoing medication and medical care, which adds another layer of urgency and financial strain.
This is a deeply difficult season for our family. My sister has done everything right. She pursued education, worked hard, followed the rules, and contributed positively to her community and workplace. Now, despite all of that, her future is suddenly uncertain.
We are asking for help to cover her asylum application fees and to help us stay afloat during this transition period while she is unable to work. Any contribution, no matter the amount, will make a meaningful difference. If you are unable to donate, sharing this page would mean just as much to us.
Thank you for taking the time to read our story and for any support you are able to offer. Your kindness and generosity give us hope during a very uncertain time
